The Compact Double Stroller: 8th Wonder of the World
In theory, a compact double stroller is a no-brainer. In reality, finding one that is truly lightweight and streamlined, easy to fold, comfortable and durable for two, and still easy to maneuver while carrying children of different ages and weights… is a feat that rocket scientists, or at least product engineers have found quite daunting. There are many on the market from Maclaren, Inglesina, Combi, Jeep, to name a few. The Inglesina Twin Swift consistently gets high marks for its harness system, maneuvering and sturdiness, giving it an A for overall child safety.
The 5-star reviewed Maclaren Twin Triumph does not disappoint. It is the narrowest (29 inches wide). It is the lightest (21.6 pounds… and yet holds 55 pounds per seat!). It is one of the smallest available models with folded dimensions 44 x 14.5 x 13 (It actually fits through the carry-on security scanner at airports!).The Jeep Twin Sport All-weather stroller is another option, although one that earns mixed reviews. Parents like that is less pricey but comment that it is also flimsy. Its sunshade, supposedly one of its selling points, provides inadequate protection. Although easy to maneuver on flat terrain, off-roading (which seems to be an expectation of Jeep owners), is impractical.
Some downsides to these double umbrellas are to be expected. A lot of parents complain about the limited storage capacity and some really miss their cupholders and snack trays. It’s all a trade-off, folks. If you want to travel light, skip the twinkies!
