Life’s A Beach Stroller
There are few things as thrilling and memorable to children and their parents as a trip to the shore. Yet, it is a rather challenging excursion when mom and dad are loaded down like mules with the necessary accoutrements of family travel. A beach stroller is the perfect solution.
But how do you pick a stroller best suited for a day at the beach? The folks at eHow recommend an all-terrain model, preferably lightweight, that can navigate in sand. I guess our decision to take the tandem double was... not so smart! Yes, we were beached as soon as we hit the sand. The eHow guys also wisely suggest finding one with aluminum and plastic parts, to minimize the rust damage from salt water.
An Amazon Reviewer says of beach strollers, "An umbrella stroller is useless on the beach. We bring the Bugaboo Frog which is the best beach stroller I have ever seen." Yes, Bugaboo has come up with an ingenious solution. The Frog's two small wheels detach so that you can easily maneuver through the sand on the remaining two, all-terrain wheels. Even better, the Frog is not just a stroller for the beach. It can be your everyday stroller too, from infancy through toddlerhood.
If you are lucky enough to live in the seaside town of Rockaway, New York, you don't have to worry about trecking through the sand at all. Rockaway's community newspaper reports that the the city's Department of Parks and Recreation introduced the "Mobi-Mat," as part of a pilot program to make their recreational areas more accessible for the people with wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. The Mobi-Mat is a plastic pathway leading from the boardwalk to the shore of Beach 116 Street. After testing the product, it seems that the path is here to stay.
