Running Stroller Safety

Bringing the baby along for your run is a great idea. It’s a great activity that keeps you fit and shows your kids that exercise can be a fun family activity. The right running stroller can ensure a safe excursion for both runner and passenger. Standard safety features on running models like those from BOB include deep seats with harnesses, a tether, handbrakes and wheel locks.

Joggers have three wheels, one in the front and two in the back. Depending on the model, the front wheel is either permanently locked in position or can be adjusted to swivel. Making sure the front wheel is in the locked position will help you control the stroller as you run.

Check the minimum age requirement on each model to make sure your tot is old enough to handle the jostling. Most doctors recommend that a baby is holding his/her head up and sitting up before riding a jogging stroller. Before this time, there are products that can help stabilize a child’s neck and head. The size of the wheels also makes a difference, with bigger wheel dimensions providing a smoother ride for your child and more maneuverability for you. They come in 12”, 16” and 20” dimensions. The type of terrain and intensity of your workout should help you determine the right size.

Think about how long you will be using this jogger. The BOB Ironman has a maximum weight capacity of 70 pounds versus others that may only accommodate 30 or 50 pounds. As your child gets older, their ability and inclination to wiggle will increase so make sure they are safely strapped in for the duration of your excursion.
